    • Radio is the peoples’ media of choice. Countries of the French speaking Maghreb analysed in this guide have seen several transformations. Morocco and Tunisia have seen a significant liberalisation of the sector since the 1990s. However, in Algeria and Mauritania radio has stayed part of State media transforming into a public service broadcaster. Recently, there has been the emergence of Internet radio. Nevertheless the modernisation of the radio has not been accompanied by an improvement in the representation of women.

    • Empowering women and the reduction of inequality between the sexes are processes, which have been started but not yet achieved. The Maghreb has seen a change towards increasing equality between women and men. However, numerous studies undertaken by civil society accompanied by journalist testimonies show how the media still broadcasts representations of women which are not in line with the reality of wider society and don’t reflect the changes underway in the life of women. As a result, despite the advances carried out in gender equality, there is still a lot to be done in order for the presence of women in the press to be in line with their part in society and the development of their country.

    • Today women still suffer a general lack of representation across the media landscape and what is shown is often not based on reality. On the one hand, they are under-represented, as much in decision making and content production as in the content itself. On the other hand, they are rarely asked to bring their expert opinion to issues in current events and remain confined, for the main part, to the roles of witness, victim or culprit. Gender sensitive journalism is both a tool for development and a catalyst for democracy since it takes into consideration a variety of points of view and encourages positive societal change. This guide provides journalists with the simple tools to create reports that are gender sensitive and promote gender equality in the media.
